Notes

Clouds are one of my absolute favorite subject and I have been photographing clouds for quite a few years by now. I even published a very successful, upscale coffee table art book - simply titled "Clouds" - featuring more than 100 of my best cloud images. Description

The Gulf coast of Louisiana is notorious for serious thunderstorms. But in this image the overall feeling is quite peaceful: The surface of the water is smooth as glass and dipped in golden light of the sun, which is going to pop over the horizon any second now, while the shrimper is gently swaying in the calm Gulf. Serenity. But the big cloud bank in the background with the first dark thunderclouds rising up tall and threatening are signaling big changes to come. Especially menacing is the billowing cloud right behind the fishing boat, with the top of the cloud seemingly glowing in a deep crimson red by reflecting the early, still invisible rays of the rising sun like a beacon in the sky. This photo would be nothing without the contrasting, dark clouds looming in the background.
