A few years ago, this flock of swans spent the entire winter in Minnesota. Every morning, they would be in the open water on this lake located in Fort Snelling State Park. No matter how cold it was, they were in the water. I came every day, to try and get an image that showed how cold it was on the water, but also showed how bright and beautiful it was. On this particular day, there was some fog which caused the frost on the trees. When I first got there before sunrise, all the swans had their heads tucked in. As the sun rose over the lake, they all seemed to wake up and start socializing. Within minutes, the pond went from a quiet cold piece of ice to a vibrant active opening in the water.
