After many years of going to Bosque del Apache to photograph the winter migrating birds, I decided to concentrate on the unusually large number of snow geese. My main objective was to capture an image of an enormous flock of snow geese flying across the Socorro Mountains. The only way to capture the enormity of the flock was to capture an image of birds filling the sky across the entire mountain range. I had to be patient, and lucky, to capture the birds congregating in this particular part of the fields. Initially, there was not enough birds to fill the sky from one end of the mountains to the other. However, they started flying in a big circular pattern, collecting more and more birds until the whole sky in front of the mountains was one huge flock of geese. They made not one, but two, passes in front of the mountain. I knew a single frame would not capture the entire flock, so for the first time, I made a series of panorama shots across the entire mountain range.
