Monticello, Minnesota is known for their trumpeter swans. Thanks to habitat protection and conservation, these birds have gone from near extinction to increasing numbers every year. Thousands of swans now "winter" in Monticello. The "wintering" began about 10 years ago when a resident of Monticello (now known as the "Swan Lady") began feeding the swans throughout the winter. The availability of food and open water, caused the swans to feel they had no need to fly south.
