Description

The magic before sunrise really comes alive in Colorado's Wet Mountain Valley: Flanked by the 14,000 ft peaks of the Southern Rockies to the West and the Wet Mountain Range to the East, this long and narrow valley is known for its strange weather patterns and highly unusual cloud formations. The cloud in this image is about 80 miles long and pretty much reached from the Southern end of the valley all the way to the Northern end. In order to be able to capture the magnitude of the enormous landscape I took seven single long exposure photos and merged them in Lightroom. I really like the way the light of the sun - still quite a bit below the horizon - is already illuminating the outer edges of the massive cloud and even the snowy Rockies are lit up. And the moon is the icing on the pre-dawn cake...
