One of the resident Barred Owls (Strix varia) living in the woods near my home. These oportunistic predators are usually nocturnal and occasionally diurnal. They generally hunt from frequented perches in their range. Their habitat is mature deciduous/coniferous forests with dense foliage and large trees, often bordering lakes, streams, swamps, meadows, or other open country. Fortunately this individual remained perched in this spot long enough and turned his head to look at me so I could capture him.
