This shot was taken close to home, but to add the element of adventure, I camped overnight, at a location which is very rarely visited. I had shot at this location before, and envisioned a composition to include the Milky Way. I had planned to take a foreground exposure during twilight, to capture sufficient detail in the red rocks, then take a separate exposure for the night sky. I used a star app on my phone to determine what time the Milky Way would be in the correct position for my shot. At the indicated time, I was able to take one night-sky exposure, before clouds rolled into the area, abruptly ending my window of opportunity. The rest of the night was filled with the sound of bats flying to and from their red-rock shelters above me, and a coyote howling not far from where I camped. The close proximity to the massive red-rock monoliths, made me feel like I was spending a night amongst giants.
