Description

Pyramid Lake covers 125,000 acres and played a significant role in the history of the Paiute tribe. Widely acclaimed as North America's most beautiful desert lake, it is the gepgraphic sink of the basin of the Trukee River, the outflow from Lake Tahoe. The Pyramid Island tufa mound is located along the eastern shore of Pyramid Lake, below the Lake Range. It extends about 400 feet above the surface of the lake. The Paiute name for this island is Wono, meaning cone-shaped basket. Note the girdle of carbonate cement located about one-fifth up the mound which was formed when the lake was at or near its overflow point.
