We were visiting Ruaha National Park in Tanzania at the end of the dry season, just before the first of the "small rains" in November. on the date of the picture, large herds of buffalo were still grouped near permanent pools along the mostly dry river. But by the following day they had dispersed to more isolated areas with fewer predators. This cape buffalo mother was determined not to lose her calf on the last day at the river. I took the picture with a Caanon EOS 7D Mark II, with Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS II USM lens. The exposure settings were 1/500 sec at f/5.6, ISO 320, focal length 330 mm, handheld.
