On this particular late-winter morning, I arrived at the Alabama Hills before sunrise to scope out various locations and try different vantage points. Although I often like to capture sunrise from Mobius Arch, it was already a bit crowded there by the time I arrived. Consequently, I moved to other locations to get set up. I was delighted to find that this arch--known as "Lathe Arch"--was empty. As such, I set up in the small area behind the arch and began shooting toward Lone Pine Peak and other mountains as the sun turned the clouds pastel pink and orange. I'm honestly glad I went outside my comfort zone and shot Lathe Arch rather than Mobius Arch that morning. Working the scene worked out well that morning!
