In a year when so many of us faced such overwhelming adversity, many of us found ourselves in need of help. Whether that adversity was in the form of a virus, natural disaster, or a creation of human error, many brave people responded to the call. In this photo, a pilot bravely flies through the air in an attempt to slow the spread of a raging wildfire. The sheer precision that these pilots operate with is an amazing thing to see. As the pilot flew in to battle the growing fire, I noticed a patch of aspen that had changed color into a golden-yellow. I wanted to frame the plane in a way that showed this “Guardian” was the last line of defense for the beautiful nature that had become in danger from such a horrible thing. I watched the plane fly and anticipated it would briefly connect for an image moving near the trees. I was pleased with the image, but it was bittersweet as much was lost from the fire's wrath that day.
