This photo reminds me to keep my options open. There are gems everywhere, even if they are not the gems you thought you were looking for.
I had gone to Big Sur to photograph gray whales and their calves on their northward migration. Alas, when I got there, the fog was so thick, I could barely see the road, much less, the water. After a bit of waiting and hoping, I decided to try to climb above the fog into the coastal mountains. I was glad I did. Once I got up into the hills, above the fog, this was the scene: Blue skies, new spring grass and lupines, miles and mile of lupines spread over the fog shrouded coastline. I didn't see any whales that day, but I did get one of my favorite photographs.
