My wife and I drove to Haines, Alaska, hoping to catch the tail end of the salmon run there. We drove along the Chilkoot River near Haines and saw a sow and her two cubs in the river. The sow was catching one salmon after another, while the cubs made halting attempts to catch fish in between playing with each other on shore. At one point the sow landed a salmon on a large rock in the river. One of the cubs scrambled to lay its front paw on the fish and claim the salmon. Mom wasn’t having any cheekiness from her cub; she ate that catch.
