After many years of going to Bosque del Apache to photograph the sandhill cranes, I was finally able to capture the image I had envisioned. I wanted to photograph the sandhill cranes coming right at me, at a very close distance, with the Socorro mountains as the background. This turned out the be a very elusive goal. The birds, elements, wind and lighting all had to come together at the right time and place. This particular evening, I noticed the birds were flying to a particular pond for the evening. At first, the wind was not in my favor, but before it became too dark, the wind changed and the birds started coming in right over my head. The magic hour didn’t last too long before it was too dark to take any pictures, but I got the shot I had wanted for some time.
