The Horsetail Fall (a.k.a. 'Firefall') optical phenomenon occurs in February--but only when conditions are right (water flowing on Horsetail Fall, clear skies at sunset, etc.). This particular evening, everything fell into place. As the last sunlight of the day struck Horsetail Fall and surrounding wet granite, it lit up as though lava were cascading down the sheer cliffs of El Capitan. To capture this image, I took three photos with a telephoto setting and stitched them together afterward.
