Description

The summit of Mt. Denali as seen from Base Camp. We had taken a flightseeing plane up the Ruth Glacier, passed by Moose's Tooth, climbed up to the North Summit overlooking the sheer 14,000 foot wall of the North Face, circled around the South Summit, down through Crosson Pass for a close-up look at Mount Hunter, through the massive Kahiltna Glacier gorge—easily the largest glacier in the Alaska Range—then up a small branch off to the east that contains the landing area Don Sheldon pioneered as the arrival point for climbing expeditions. This is where the climbers begin and conclude their trek up Denali—Base Camp. Here I set up to shoot the summits. Many are not aware that there are two summits to the mountain, the north summit, 19,470 feet and the south summit, which is the highest one, 20,320 feet on the right in this picture.
