The Strike

Equipment Info
NIKON D500
420mm / f/8 / 1/1600 sec. / ISO 400
Description

Imagine spotting fish on the move from 60 feet above the water, then diving after them hitting the surface at around 40 mph. Well that's what pelicans do every day. The shock is tremendous, and to help to prevent injuries they have inflatable sacks under their skin. I got this shot of a Brown Pelican strike at the instant before it hit the water off the coast of Seaside, Cardiff State Beach, CA.
