I recently took an impromptu trip to my “happy place” in the John Muir Wilderness. As always, I was rewarded by going—this time by a gorgeous sunset from this well-known, awe-inspiring overlook. Last Friday as smoke was closing in on my hometown from nearby fires, I checked the forecast and made a last-minute decision to journey 3+ hours by car to the John Muir Wilderness (with an overnight in a nearby Eastern Sierra town). That evening, as I reached this overlook, a beautiful set of cumulus clouds stretched over the valley, waiting to be transformed into bright orange at sunset. Sure enough, as the sun began to set, the clouds lit up in a beautiful orange hue. I ran from this patch of paintbrush flowers to a nearby overlook and back, snapping photos as quickly as I could to capture the fleeting color. I LOVE the Sierra Nevada—especially the John Muir Wilderness—and am blessed to live nearby so I can decide on a whim to go enjoy it!
