Description

After the peak night of the Perseid meteor shower, I went to pick up my camera before dawn, and was treated to this stunning sunrise! There are subtle ripples on the water where the tadpole shrimp are starting to stir. Their eggs can lie dormant in dried mud up to 27 years before a rain shower recreates their habitat. These ones resembling small prehistoric horseshoe crabs were close to 2" long. They have to grow and reproduce fast to race the drying pool.
Apparently they they can reproduce as little as a week after hatching!
