Bodie is 13 miles east of Highway 395 between Mono Lake and Bridgeport, in California's Eastern Sierra region.
This a panorama of exposure-bracketed long exposures, combined into an HDR panorama. This was captured as three exposure brackets of 75 seconds each (30, 25 and 20 seconds). So the entire time to capture it was 225 seconds, a little over 3.5 minutes for all of the exposures, then a few minutes post-processing. Not much more effort than capturing single exposures, but the composition is better than a single 14mm image, the stitched panorama has less perspective distortion, and both the HDR process and the panorama stitching help reduce noise.
On our last Bodie night photography workshop of the year, we had clear skies and green airglow after the rain, rainbows, sun rays and colorful sunset. And the rain helps clear out any haze, so the stars are more prominent! Rainy afternoons lead to the best night photography conditions in the Eastern Sierra!
