I had arrived before sunrise to this tiny island in the mountains of western Maine, and it did not look promising. It looked too clear, meaning no clouds in the sky to catch the color of sunrise. The moon and fog were pleasing but a blank sky wouldn't work for the image I had in mind. As sunrise approached, a thin layer of clouds formed and what looked like a dud of a sunrise turned quite spectacular. I have shot this scene many times now, but I am always amazed at the different moods and atmosphere that are produced.
