Venture 13 miles up Bode Road from highway 395, if you dare. The infamous last 3 miles are unpaved, and feature a slippery gravel road surface tilted toward a precipice that threatens to send your vehicle careening down the sagebrush-covered slopes below.
Bodie's buildings full of artifacts are closed to entry, and the town is closed to visitors at night, but we're able to get permission a few times each year to take a handful of photographers into the buildings or to stay into the night, when the wind is causing rusty weather vanes to move, doors to open and close, and pieces of tin roof and metal wire to bang against the wooden buildings.
There are over 100 buildings left in the Wild West "ghost town" of Bodie, California. The Boone General Store is still full of products from the time, as if the entire town full of people just disappeared one day, or got up and left. When you try to look inside, you get reflections of the world outside, as if the present and past merge into one.
