After many years of going to Bosque del Apache to photograph the winter migrating birds, I decided to concentrate on the unusually large number of snow geese, which were around 40,000 this particular year. I wanted an image that showed the huge concentration of birds. The trick is determining which direction they will take off based on the wind direction, and pre-positioning yourself to capture the optimal flight angle, where the birds are flying across the scene. The goal of this image was to capture the flock of snow geese in the autumn setting. In order to achieve this, I had to place the tree in the foreground, otherwise the birds would completely obscure the tree. It was particularly difficult to find a setting where all these elements came together.
