Description

After their first year, when they are with their mothers, young Bighorn sheep males (Ovis canadensis) form groups or mobs. These bachelors, shedding their heavy winter coats in early Spring, roam the grasslands of Badlands National Park. It is within these mobs that dominance relationships become evident. These behavioral interactions are closely tied to to dominance rank. Direct reproductive benefits of high rank, in terms of more breeding opportunities are obvious and the individuals become serious.
