Description

The Pronghorn is my favorite mammal that I look forward to seeing on my trips to the western US. The Pronghorn is the lone Antilocapridae (say that three times fast!) survivor of the Pleistocene epoch. Neither an Antelope nor a Deer, the Pronghorn has no direct lineage from any other mammal that exists in the US in modern day. It is actually most closely related to the Giraffe, although obviously distinctly unique. Pronghorns live in the western desert states of the US. And they are the fastest land animals in North America, clocking at speeds approaching 60 mph! This young Pronghorn was photographed shortly after sunrise near the NE entrance of Yellowstone National Park, south of Gardiner, Montana. October 2015
