If departing from Portland, Oregon, head east on HW84 until the intersection with HW 206 heading south. Keep going south until intersecting with HW19, stay on HW19 until intersecting with HW207. Stay on HW207 until intersecting with HW26 which is a few miles from Mitchell Oregon. the Painted Hills formation of the John Day Fossill Beds is about 6 miles NW of Mitchell. Lodging in Mitchel is limited to a few "hotels". Dining only available in about two places. One gas station, no traffic lights.
Either get there early enough for the sun to begin to shine into the north facing bowl or later in the day as the sun begins to set. A lens in the range of 200 to 600 mm is recommended. Drive to the shelter just off the access road. Park the car and hike a short distance up the ridge to a bench with an incredible view. Plan to spend 3 or 4 hours depending on the lighting.
The yellow Bee flower does not always bloom each year. In wet years, it blooms more consistently than dry years
