As I drove through Custer State Park about 45 minutes before sunrise, I stopped at a bend in the road where I hear bison grunting. As the sky began to lighten, I could see a small herd of bison where that had bedded down in a part of the prairie east of the road. The sky was beginning to take on some beautiful color as the bison began to rise. I grabbed my tripod and set up on the edge of the road and took a series of photos hoping for one with little or no overlap between animals. This was my favorite as the sun broke the horizon.
