I was driving through Theodore Roosevelt early one morning, taking my time and watching for wildlife. The rural mail carrier was right on my tail so I pulled over to let her pass me. I Pulled out right behind her and as we got near a prairie dog town, this coyote run across the road right in front of me. I thought that he wouldn't stay around for long the way he was running. The coyote got on the prairie dog mound and stopped. He looked down towards the river, and I thought he was going to run in that direction. I had stopped to take images of him when he turned sideways to me and started to howl. Other coyotes down by the river howled back at him and then he took off towards the river to join up with them. Talk about being lucky. It's not very often you're this close to a coyote when he starts to howl, and this was happening about mid morning on 11 -25 -2012.
