Go to Baker, California, and go east across Interstate 15 to the beginning of Mojave National Preserve.
I was so lucky to get this shot in early October of 2010. I was headed home to San Diego, CA, after several weeks of touring the Southwest, which included a black-and-white workshop at the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops. Late afternoon traffic backed up to Baker along I-15 convinced me to find a motel room, then go shooting before sunset. I had barely started photographing just inside the Mojave National Preserve when I lucked into a rain squall coming from the east as the sun was still shining in the west from a low angle. Only a few raindrops fell on me, but I beat a retreat to my car when lightning approached. I converted the image to black and white in Nik's Silver Efex Pro. Thank goodness for the traffic that made me stop for the night. Definitely a lucky break.
