Description

The Cyanocitta stelleri perched on a small tree at the entrance of Julie Pfieffer Burns State Park in Big Sur, California. • While walking into the entrance of the park, I stumbled across this jay—watching the cars and people walk by. I had not planned to shoot until continuing further on the trails and getting out towards the infamous McWay Falls, but this opportunity could not be missed. I carefully set down my gear and pulled together by camera body and lens and took several shots. I inched closer and closer to get more of the bird to fill the frame. I stopped at this point, as I felt I was pushing my luck. At almost the same time, the jay puffed up, which I took as a warning sign that I was truly pushing my luck. I got no closer and continued to shoot. After several minutes I decided to let the bird be and continue on my way. Several bystanders decided that they'd try to shoot the jay with their cell phones. The jay quickly became annoyed and took off.
