Sea Pines Nature Preserve is located within Sea Pines Plantation, the largest gated community on the Island, so it does require a $5 day pass fee to gain access if you are not staying within Sea Pines. It is on the southern most tip of the Island. Hilton Head Island is a 45 minute drive from Savannah, Georgia, going north on I-95 to Highway 278 and then east to Hilton Head Island.
I lived on Hilton Head Island for almost two years from 2011 to 2013. During that time I was able to bring a great deal of awareness to the natural beauty of the area through my photography. So much of what is associated with Hilton Head has to do with family vacations, restaurants and golf. There really are hidden pockets of nature that provide a great deal of subject matter for nature photography. Winter is a great time to avoid the summer tourist crowds and I loved having this trail through the Sea Pines Nature Preserve all to myself so that I could take my time and compose my images.
This was a winter sunrise in January along the Boggy Gut area in the Sea Pines Nature Preserve on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Once again I utilized multiple exposures for merging to HDR with tonal adjustment and then converted to black and white using Nik Silver Efex Pro. The Sea Pines Nature Preserve is one of the few areas on Hilton Head Island kept natural and protected from development. The low winter sun provided more subtle lighting even though it was a clear day.
