During the fall, for the first time our butterfly garden came alive with the fourth and final generation of Monarch butterflies of the year. This generation will make the long migration down to Mexico to stay for the winter to return in February and start the first generation of the next year. Shortly after they emerge, they hang on to the chrysalis from which they emerged as they wait for their wings to dry and gravity to pull them flat and harden. This allowed me to get close and they remained still long enough for me to try and get some macro shots without interfering with them. It was a rewarding experience. The details and patterns in their wings are truly amazing.
