Marble is a little over an hour's drive from Aspen. The drive to Crystal Mill is 5 miles and takes one hour. Do not attempt this in a rental car unless you rented a Jeep Wrangler, Suburban or "monster truck". Unless you are a 4x4 off road enthusiast do not attempt this. You can also hike in (10 miles round trip) but the tour operator charges $50 per person and it's well worth it.

We visited Crystal Mill on October 1, 2013, right after we were evicted from the Maroon Bells area due to the government closure. It was a glorious afternoon and the fall colors were emerging with 70 degree temperatures. It was worth every nickel the tour operator charged and the bone-crushing hour long ride to get there. We were in a small group and took the usual shots plus some others from unusual spots down on the creek. We made a quick stop in the ghost town of Crystal Mill and Lizard Lake on the way back.
