Beaufort Island lies north of Ross Island (and McMurdo Station) and was accessed with help from a grant by the NSF polar programs.
Taken at the Beaufort Island Emperor Penguin colony at a time the chicks are well formed and growing. This was taken during a census of the colony. Taken in October as the austral summer comes on strong. Here, both mom and dad are present with their young. The parents take turns foraging for food and watching the lil guy.
