While photographing some intimate landscapes in Ute Valley Park on a warm afternoon in July, 2013, I turned to find a young buck mule deer, sprouting velvet covered antlers, lounging in the shade of some scrub oak and pine trees not more than 20 feet away. After taking a few shots of him I noticed a doe well hidden among the foliage behind him. He appeared to be guarding her from danger, but did not perceive me as such. Bears and mountain lions do frequent the park.
