Description

The aurora borealis over Alaska's Turnagain Arm and Chugach Mountains. I am from Kentucky and took this image during a trip to Alaska in March 2015. My Story Behind the Photo: My Dad, one of my best friends, passed away in January 2015. I visited Alaska in March. I've been to Alaska nine times and I had never seen the northern lights from the ground. Alaska photographer and good friend, Carol Lahnum, and I went out aurora hunting in the sub-zero weather, driving down Seward Highway along Turnagain Arm when I finally saw the aurora. We pulled off the road and set up our gear. I was positioned on a small piece of land that jutted out into the water where ice floated by, making eerie cracking sounds. It was cold and a little scary being so close to the freezing water. I was in awe of the aurora. It was beautiful, breathtaking and magical. At one point, the aurora disappeared over the mountains. I yelled at the top of my lungs "Daddy, if you're up there, I want to see the dancing lights." The lights started dancing over the water. Carol yelled "Thank you Daddy." She then told me that many of the natives believe that the aurora is the spirits of their loved ones dancing in the skies. Dad loved to dance, I took it as sign that he was ok, dancing in the sky for me and Carol. Now I know the scientific reason why we saw the aurora, but my soul believes it was a sign of love from Dad - thus my title "Spiritual Awakening."
