This was taken along a stream in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee. From I-40, take Exit 435. Follow Hwy 321 to Gatlinburg, then on to the national park.

Notes

The best times for wildflowers is late April in the mountains. As one flower peaks, another just begins to bloom as the season changes.

Description

The cardinal flower blooms in late June and early July. It is found growing around wet places, such as along creeks, and in swampy places. The brilliant red stands out easily.
