McNeil River State Game Sanctuary is a remote area where bears congregate in mass numbers in the middle of the summer when the salmon are coming up river to spawn. I had a long shot list of photos I wanted to capture but I wasn't quite prepared for the exhilaration of being there, so close to so many bears, so intimate you could reach out and touch the bears. As I sat there watching the bears and counting how many I could see at one time I realized I needed a pano of the McNeil Falls area of McNeil River to truly capture the beauty of the landscape and the concentration of bears. There are 36 bears in this photo along with bald eagles and a variety of gulls. It was the best way I could think of to capture the natural beauty of this pristine location in Alaska.
