This picture was taken with a wide angle lens in order to capture the breadth of the scene. We were making our way from lake Powell to Escalante, Utah, along Smokey Mountain Road, when I noticed this storm in the rear view mirror. As anyone who has traveled dirt roads in the south west knows,if they get wet, they become impossible to pass. This was the last thing we wanted to see. At the same time we needed to take pictures. The light was right so I stopped to get a quick shot off. This storm and the ones that followed left use stuck waiting for the road to dry. We could have been stuck for days if they kept coming. We had passed the point of no return in that we didn't have enough gas to get back. At the same time we had plenty of food and beer to survive. The locals in Escalante just shook their heads as we told them what we had done. I think I heard someone mumble something about "city folks".
