Finally got it! This shot was literally 2 years, 5 hikes, and two separate trips in the making – but I was finally - finally - able to pull it off June 2012! My son Grant and I had been to Ludington State Park the year before and stayed several days in an attempt to get a good shot of the Big Sable Lighthouse – and we failed. Every evening we’d make the 4 mile hike – only to end up with conditions that didn’t work out like we’d hoped. Well, I’m nothing if not persistent, so this year my wife Rose and I went back to see if we could finally get a good image of the lighthouse. This particular evening we began the trek to the lighthouse, keeping a careful eye on the clouds off to the west. Would this be the night or would they simply snuff out the sunset as had happened before? When we finally arrived at the lighthouse I knew right where I wanted to set up – all the past efforts at least gave me a good idea where the best shot was! So I setup the camera, debated exactly where to place the tripod and what lens to use, then settled in and watched the show. Sunset wasn’t all that great, but as the sun slipped further and further below the horizon, the clouds above and around the lighthouse started putting on a fantastic show. I snapped away and even managed to capture a few little stars coming out. As we hiked back I wasn’t sure if I’d really captured what I was after, but a few minutes on the computer put all doubts to rest. I’d finally captured the shot I’d set out for over a year ago.
