Notes

Cades Cove is great fun, even if all of the fall foliage isn't peaking. I liked renting this Zeiss lens. I'm amazed at its color and contrast rendition, moreso than its ultimate sharpness (as compared with my Canon 135mm L f/2, or especially an 85mm f/1.2). The Zeiss color seems to have the warmth of, and yet more depth than the "Sigma" look, with just an extreme, lifelike contrast of shadows to highlights. In my experience, manually focussing through the viewfinder has been tedious with most lenses (including my 135 and an 85 f/1.2...but curiously not my 70-200 f/4 in any of its focal range) Often I have to resort to live-view focusing. I have found a focused subject via the finder isn't always what is sharp focus on the sensor. I attribute this to using full-frame lenses on my crop camera...perhaps something gets lost in the translation? With an AF lens I can use the micro adjustment on my 50D...but that doesn't help with a manual-focus lens. In any case, I still want to try other Zeiss lenses...

Description

At this moment I was shooting out the side of a moving minivan, so had arperture set wide open to increase shutter speed and keep ISO down.
