Brief Directions

Phinda is a private game reserve near Richard's Bay in South Africa. It's a little over an hour by small plane from Johannesburg.

Notes

We went to Phinda the beginning of September, which is the dry season, allowing for better visibility of the animals. It's still cool enough that the animals are active. ISO 400, f/8, 1/500 sec, 135mm

Description

The guide heard the call of the Nyala fawn. We found the fawn, standing in shock next to a bush, with blood on it's neck. Without interfering, we went to observe the cheetah catch her breath with her young kits a short distance away. When she went to retrieve the meal where she'd left it, it was gone! The look on her face was one of disbelief. As we sat there watching this drama, she walked out of our sight and the next thing we knew the fawn, followed in hot pursuit by the cheetah, ran right past the vehicle. The photo shows her in the process of dragging the fawn into the bush while her kits observe and learn about hunting. The guides said they'd never seen nature's drama play out like it did that morning. We were very grateful to be able to photograph nature's drama within 200mm range without interfering.
