We stood there watching each other for over an hour, hardly moving. I had spotted this gorgeous, wild heron in the lily pond of the San Diego Botanic Garden, and was now about 4 meters from it. I sensed it was hungry, but it wasn't about to start hunting until it was sure it was safe. So we watched and waited. The sun was going down and the regular park closing time was growing near, but still we waited. Then it must have finally felt safe and started hunting, and we both got some great catches. By then my feet were sore from standing in one spot and I was cold, yet the experience was definitely worth the wait.
