Description

On 26 June 2012 the Waldo Canyon Wildfire crested the foothills and entered northwest Colorado Springs destroying 347 homes. We were forced to evacuate and spent the next 3 days with friends east of the city. That first night I captured this image of the fire, driven by 65 mph winds, as it burned much of the Mountain Shadows neighborhood. From my vantage point 10 miles away the winds were still very strong and time exposures were difficult even with a tripod and remote release. In retrospect I should have cranked up the ISO higher but I was more concerned about our home than the settings on the camera. Even at a higher ISO I think there would still be motion. Our home was spared.
