Winemakers and grape growers the world over readily will tell you that theirs is a difficult craft, full of long days and much hard labor. This is doubly so for Italy's Cinque Terra winemakers. Literally carved out of the rock wall of sloping hills, these vineyards rise steeply to form peaks overlooking the villages and the sea. Each day the winemakers climb to tend to their vines and during crush, methodically descend laden with a bin of grapes on their shoulders. With few exceptions, there’s not much technology at work here – just fierce determination to produce quality wine. This image was captured in mid-September just ahead of an impending rain.
