To get rained on at Castle Valley in Utah is about as likely as winning the Powerball lottery. Arid and hot is the daily forecast most of the year. But to my complete surprise I actually got caught in a true April shower, getting me soaked but also providing gorgeous light at sunrise. It started pouring just as I was setting up my gear about a half hour before sunrise, and it came fast and furious. Luckily, the rain took a brief pause and some sunlight of the rising sun shot through the clouds, hitting the sandstone formations. Truly intense were the clouds, streaking overhead with colors changing from purple to dark blue. The reprieve lasted about three minutes before the clouds opened up again, releasing another dose of life-bringing moisture on the parched landscape. Looking at the image, it almost feels like winning the lottery.
