I am a lucky person because the wilderness starts right in my backyard: Living in the Wet Mountains of Colorado at an elevation of about 9,000 ft and directly adjacent to a large wildlife preserve plus the Rockies only seven miles away, there are very few days when I don't encounter something wild and special. Bear, mountain lions, coyotes, eagles, bobcats - we have them all around our house. I happen to be the only person with a permit from the forest service allowing me to enter the Nature Preserve next to our house all year round. That's where true wilderness can be found. The attached photo was taken right from the patio of my house, showing a big buck and one of his girls at sunrise, when the first rays of light just started to put a warm, orange tint on the high peaks of the Rockies in the background.
