I spent a week photographing the birds on the Laguna Madre side of South Padre Island. One of my favorite birds there is the Black Skimmer. There was a particular inlet that I found them in large numbers interspersed with the seagulls. The water here was very shallow at low tide. I positioned myself upwind of the birds and waited for the birds to fly in and out. On some days the water was perfectly flat, creating mirror-like reflections. The majority of the time they took off in groups of twos and threes. My main photographic goal was to capture the birds flying in tandem with enough separation that there was no merging of the wings.
