Milky Way over Hickman Arch

East of Torrey, off Utah highway 24.

I spent a week hiking and photographing Capitol Reef National Park. One of my goals was to capture an image of the milky way over the park. As soon as I saw Hickman Arch on one of my day-hikes, I knew this was the foreground I wanted. I paid close attention on the hike out so I could find the arch in the dark. After hiking the trail in the dark, and waiting for the milky way to rise, I positioned the camera in such a way as to place the arch in front of the milky way. Once the milky way was in the proper position, I used my gel lights to light paint the arch.
