Brief Directions

The cranes move around the reserve throughout the day, though they seem to start at the big pond. They begin to engage in a magnificent cacophony that continues until the entire flock takes off. If you watch, before they launch they have leaning behavior that gives you time to prepare for lift off.

Notes

I was told to keep my non-shooting hand on my lens and to use its pointing finger as a guide to follow the birds in flight. It genuinely seemed to help keep them in the frame.

Description

Bosque de Apache National Wildlift Refuge in New Mexico comes alive in November as thousands of sandhill cranes migrate here from Western Montana, Yellowstone Basin, Utah and northwesstern Colorado. They come to feed on the grasses, to find a winter home in the wetlands of the Rio Grande River, and to mate. Dancing and wing-flapping is a big part of their courtship rituals. This fellow landed and took his time to settle his wings so that all om the pond might admire him..
